Formulation

This solution is clear, viscous, and ranges in color from colourless to a pale brownish-yellow. It may contain trace amounts of other sugars such as lactose and fructose. Available in various bottle sizes from 100 mL to 1000 mL, each bottle comes with a convenient measuring cup to ensure accurate dosing.

Mechanism of Action

Lactulose works by increasing stool water content and enhancing peristalsis, providing relief from constipation typically within 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, it alters colonic flora to reduce blood ammonia levels, a crucial function for those with hepatic encephalopathy.

Dosage and Administration

• For Adults (Constipation): Start with 15–45 mL daily, adjusting to a maintenance dose of 10–30 mL.
