Description

The Excilon AMD Drain Sponge by Kendall, also known as Covidien, is a specialized wound care product designed to enhance the management of medical sites with drains, catheters, chest tubes, IVs, and tracheostomies. This sterile, non-woven dressing is crafted from a rayon/polyester blend, ensuring a lint-free and fray-resistant construction that minimizes the risk of wound contamination.

Antimicrobial Protection

A key feature of this sponge is its impregnation with 0.2% PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide), an antiseptic agent that offers broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection. This includes effectiveness against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and yeast, notably MRSA and VRE, helping to reduce the risk of infection and cross-contamination.

Innovative Design

The unique pre-cut T-slit, or star design, allows the sponge to conform snugly around medical devices, ensuring secure placement and optimal drainage. This design facilitates easy application and removal, providing comfort with minimal pain.

Superior Absorbency

The Excilon AMD Drain Sponge boasts fast wicking action and superior absorbency, making it ideal for effective exudate management. Its non-adherent nature ensures that it does not stick to the wound or gel upon contact with exudate, allowing for clean and straightforward dressing changes.

Usage and Application

Available in sizes 5 cm x 5 cm and 10 cm x 10 cm, the sponges are typically supplied in packets of two. They are suitable for use on clean, superficial wounds without saturation or infection. Application involves cleansing and drying the peri-wound area, placing the dressing with the device tucked into the T-slit, and securing it with a secondary dressing or adhesive tape as needed. The dressing can remain in place for up to three days for clean, non-infected wounds.

Precautions

Users should avoid using the sponge with Dakin’s solution or bleach, as these substances can deactivate PHMB and cause yellowing. It is also not recommended for patients with known sensitivity to PHMB.

The Excilon AMD Drain Sponge is a reliable choice for healthcare professionals seeking effective wound management solutions, providing comfort, protection, and peace of mind in clinical settings.
