Description
The MICROCUFF* Paediatric Endotracheal Tube by Avanos is a specialized medical device designed to enhance airway management in pediatric patients. This sterile, single-use tube features a high volume–low pressure (HVLP) cuff, providing an effective tracheal seal at minimal cuff pressures. Such design aims to reduce the risk of tracheal injury while improving ventilation control, making it suitable for patients ranging from term infants (≥3 kg) to those up to 16 years old.
Key Features
- Advanced Cuff Design: The micro-thin polyurethane cuff minimizes folds and channels, reducing air leaks and mucosal irritation. Positioned distally on the tube shaft, it expands below the sub-glottis for optimal performance.
- Placement Precision: The tube includes a black intubation depth mark above the cuff for accurate placement between the vocal cords, along with centimeter depth markings and four precision bands to ensure correct positioning.
- Imaging Compatibility: A radiopaque line allows for clear visualization on imaging, aiding in precise tube placement.
Variants
The tube is available in Magill (oral/nasal) and Oral Curved (RAE) types, with size ranges from 3.0 mm to 7.0 mm internal diameter for Magill, and 3.0 mm to 6.5 mm for Oral Curved.
Usage Guidelines
- Cuff Inflation: Recommended to maintain an effective sealing pressure not exceeding 20 cm H₂O, with continuous monitoring advised, especially during atmospheric pressure changes.
- Pressure Monitoring: Use of a three-way tap and manometer is recommended for accurate pressure measurement.
- Aseptic Technique: Adherence to medical procedures for intubation and extubation is crucial, with the tube intended for single use only.
Clinical Benefits
This device offers reliable control of carbon dioxide, reduces air leaks and aspiration risks, and maintains positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). It also minimizes the waste of volatile anesthetic agents and the risk of pressure-related tracheal injuries, contributing to lower reintubation rates and improved airway control in pediatric patients.
Precautions
- Patient Suitability: Not recommended for neonates or infants under 3 kg.
- Pressure Sensitivity: Cuff pressure should be monitored and adjusted as needed during transport or altitude changes.
The MICROCUFF* Paediatric Endotracheal Tube represents a significant advancement in pediatric airway management, offering enhanced safety and efficacy for healthcare providers.
