Description
The ResMed Leak Valve, model number 24988, is an essential component designed for use in ventilator breathing circuits. Manufactured by ResMed, this valve serves as a critical exhalation port for patients utilizing both invasive and non-invasive ventilation setups. Its design is particularly beneficial in low dispersion circuits, aiming to minimize virus aerosolization and thereby reduce infection risks for healthcare workers.
Key Features
- Single Patient Use: Intended for use over a period of 1 to 7 days, ensuring hygiene and effectiveness.
- Integrated Anti-Asphyxia Valve (AAV): Provides continuous airflow through vent holes. In the event of ventilator failure, the AAV opens to prevent the re-breathing of exhaled carbon dioxide. Versions are available with and without the AAV, though use without it is only recommended in emergencies.
- Connector Specifications: Features a dual 22M/15F connector on the patient side and a 22M connector on the device side, compliant with ISO 5356-1 standards.
Design and Compatibility
The ResMed Leak Valve is larger in volume and dead space compared to the ResMed Leak Port but maintains equivalent vent-flow specifications, sound pressure levels, and impedance. It is not part of external humidifier or catheter mount components but can connect to standardized tracheostomy interfaces and catheter mounts. When not using an external humidifier, it can be used with a Heat and Moisture Exchange Filter (HMEF).
This valve is compatible with several ResMed devices, including:
- Stellar Series ventilators (Stellar 100/150)
- S9 VPAP ST-A
- AirCurve ST-A
- Lumis ST-A
- Astral 100/150
Setup and Usage
During circuit configuration, the valve should be placed after the antibacterial filter and before the air tubing. Clinicians are advised to ensure the AAV membrane remains closed during ventilation, adjusting EPAP if necessary. It is intended for use with ventilator devices equipped with appropriate alarms and is not recommended for non-alarmed devices without patient monitoring.
Packaging and Documentation
The ResMed Leak Valve is supplied as a single unit for single patient use. An instruction sheet is included, providing comprehensive details on intended use, setup, cleaning information, and technical specifications. Labeling and usage indications are also detailed in the Stellar 100/150 user and clinical guide.
Precautions
Healthcare professionals are cautioned that using the valve without an AAV can lead to significant CO₂ rebreathing if the ventilator fails, particularly in the absence of alarms or independent patient monitoring. Additionally, using other leak ports instead of the ResMed Leak Valve or ResMed Leak Port may affect device performance and alarm functionality.
