Description
Biatain Alginate, crafted by Coloplast, is a versatile wound dressing designed to manage moderately to heavily exuding wounds. Its composition includes 85% calcium alginate and 15% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), providing superior absorption capabilities. Upon contact with wound exudate, it forms a cohesive gel, maintaining a moist environment conducive to healing while minimizing leakage and reducing the risk of maceration.
Key Features
- High Absorption: Effectively retains wound exudate, ensuring a clean and manageable wound site.
- Gel Formation: Promotes a moist healing environment and allows for easy, one-piece removal, minimizing pain and trauma.
- Conformability: Available in both flat and ribbon (rope) formats, it can be cut and shaped to fit wounds of various sizes and depths, including cavity wounds.
- Haemostatic Properties: The release of calcium ions aids in controlling minor bleeding in superficial wounds.
Usage
Biatain Alginate is suitable for a wide range of wound types, including:
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous and arterial ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Donor sites
- Traumatic wounds
- Post-operative wounds
- First- and second-degree burns (under clinical supervision)
Each dressing is intended for single use and should be applied under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It requires a secondary dressing and should not be left in place for more than seven days.
Variants
- Standard Biatain Alginate: Ideal for general exuding wounds.
- Biatain Alginate Ribbon: Designed for narrow or cavity wounds.
- Biatain Alginate Ag: Incorporates an ionic silver complex for antimicrobial protection, suitable for infected wounds or those at risk of infection.
Precautions
Biatain Alginate should not be used on dry or lightly exuding wounds, nor is it intended to control heavy bleeding. It is crucial to ensure that patients do not have sensitivities to alginates, CMC, or silver (in the Ag variant).
Application Guidelines
For optimal results, the dressing should be cut to fit the wound using sterile scissors, applied after cleansing the wound, and covered with an appropriate secondary dressing. The frequency of dressing changes depends on the wound condition and exudate levels.
Biatain Alginate stands out as a reliable choice for effective wound management, offering flexibility, high integrity, and ease of use, thereby supporting the healing process across a variety of clinical scenarios.
