Description
Gastrografin Oral Liquid is a specialized iodinated contrast medium designed for enhancing radiological examinations of the gastrointestinal tract. Manufactured by Bayer, this high-osmolar, water-soluble solution is particularly useful in X-ray and CT imaging, providing clear visualization where traditional barium sulfate may be unsuitable.
Composition
This contrast agent is composed of sodium amidotrizoate and amidotrizoate meglumine, with a significant iodine concentration of 370 mg/mL. The solution is clear, faintly yellow, and hypertonic, offering a sweet taste due to its formulation. Additional excipients include disodium edetate, saccharin sodium, polysorbate 80, star anise oil, and purified water.
Administration
Gastrografin can be administered orally or rectally, depending on clinical needs. It is not intended for intravascular use. The typical dosage for adults ranges from 60 to 100 mL, while children and infants require lower, often diluted doses. For CT imaging, a 3% solution is recommended, and for rectal administration, up to 500 mL of diluted solution may be used.
Indications
This product is indicated for use in various gastrointestinal conditions, such as suspected stenosis, acute hemorrhage, and post-surgical assessments. It aids in the early diagnosis of perforations and anastomotic defects and is beneficial in treating uncomplicated meconium ileus and managing small bowel obstructions.
Contraindications and Precautions
Contraindications include hypersensitivity to iodine, manifest hyperthyroidism, and undiluted use in patients with low plasma volume. Special precautions should be taken for individuals with allergy histories, thyroid dysfunction, or cardiovascular issues. Adequate hydration is crucial, especially in young children, to mitigate potential adverse effects.
Adverse Effects
Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions or electrolyte imbalances may occur, particularly in infants. Gastrografin may also interfere with thyroid function tests for several weeks post-administration.
Storage Instructions
Gastrografin is supplied in amber glass bottles of various sizes and should be stored below 25°C, away from light and X-rays. If crystallisation occurs, gentle warming and shaking are advised. The solution must remain clear and free of particles, and any unused portion should be discarded within 72 hours of opening.
Additional Information
This product does not exert pharmacological effects; its efficacy lies in providing radio-opacity for effective imaging. Proper disposal according to local regulations is recommended, ensuring safe and effective use in medical settings.
