The INTROCAN SAFETY® IV Catheter by B. Braun is a highly specialized medical device engineered for secure and efficient intravenous access. Designed for single-use, this peripheral IV catheter is ideal for various clinical applications, including blood sampling, blood pressure monitoring, and the administration of fluids and blood. It is also suitable for subcutaneous infusion therapies and compatible with power injectors, supporting pressures up to 300–325 PSI, depending on the model and size.

Key Features

• Automatic Safety Mechanism: The catheter features a passive safety shield that automatically covers the needle tip upon withdrawal, significantly reducing the risk of needlestick injuries. This mechanism requires no user activation and remains secure through disposal, aligning with safety standards such as INS and OSHA.

• Double Flashback Technology: Provides clear visual confirmation of vessel entry through both needle and catheter flashback, enhancing first-stick success and accurate placement.

• Universal Bevel Needle: Designed with a unique back-cut and tricuspid incision for flexible insertion angles, aiming to minimize tissue trauma and improve patient comfort.

Material and Design

The catheter is available in two material options:

• Polyurethane (PUR): Offers a softer feel for longer in-dwelling use.
• Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP): Provides a firmer construction.

All models are free from DEHP, natural rubber latex, and PVC, and feature radiopaque stripes for enhanced X-ray visibility. Additional design elements include a removable vented flashplug for syringe attachment and a push-off plate for one-handed advancement.

Identification and Environmental Considerations

Color-coded labels and illustrations on both the device and packaging allow for quick identification of gauge size and product variation. The catheter's smaller, lighter components are designed to reduce medical waste and disposal costs.

The INTROCAN SAFETY® IV Catheter is available in various gauge sizes (14G to 24G) and lengths (0.55 in to 2.5 in), with designs including straight hub, winged, and deep access models. Specialized models, such as the Introcan Safety 2 and Introcan Safety 3, offer additional features like Multi-Access Blood Control and a closed system with an integrated septum.
