Description
The Passy-Muir Low Profile Tracheostomy Valve is an innovative medical device designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals with tracheostomy tubes. Available in models PMV 2000, PMV 2001, and PMV 2020, these valves are crafted to facilitate speech and improve swallowing by redirecting exhaled airflow through the vocal folds, mouth, and nose.
Key Features
- One-Way Valve Design: This unique feature allows inhalation through the tracheostomy tube while closing on exhalation, enabling speech and enhancing secretion management.
- No-Leak, Bias-Closed System: The patented design helps maintain positive airway pressure, potentially improving swallowing and the senses of smell and taste.
- Low Profile and Lightweight: These valves are discreet and comfortable, with PMV 2000 and PMV 2020 in clear and PMV 2001 in purple for easy identification.
Compatibility
- Universal 15mm Hub: Compatible with standard tracheostomy tube hubs.
- Ventilator Use: PMV 2000 and PMV 2001 can be used with ventilators using appropriate adapters, while PMV 2020 is not intended for ventilator use.
- Oxygen Delivery: Low-flow supplemental oxygen delivery is possible with PMV 2000 and PMV 2001 using the PMA 2000 Oxygen Adapter.
Clinical Benefits
- Voice and Speech Production: Enables communication for tracheostomy and ventilator patients.
- Improved Swallowing and Secretion Management: Restores positive airway pressure and reduces infection risk.
- Facilitates Coughing and Weaning: Assists with ventilator weaning and supports speech development in pediatric patients.
Indications
Suitable for both pediatric and adult patients, these valves are intended for use with fully deflated cuffed tracheostomy tubes. PMV 2020 is also suitable for neonates under specific conditions and is not intended for use with endotracheal tubes or laryngectomized patients.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily cleaning involves swishing in warm soapy water, thorough rinsing, and air drying. Avoid hot water and harsh cleaning agents. The valve should be removed during medicated nebulizer treatments and replaced if it becomes sticky or shows increased resistance.
Packaging
Each valve is sold individually, including a Secure-It tether, storage container, and instructions. As a prescription device, it is available only on the order of a physician.
