Description
Multigate Medical Products’ Vienna Anti-Embolism Stockings provide graduated compression for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis in recuperating, largely non-ambulatory patients. Intended for short-term clinical use under protocol, the stockings are latex-free and knitted from polyamide and elastane with quick-wicking properties to help evaporate perspiration. Available in knee-high and thigh-high variants, the range includes bariatric sizes. Stockings are non-sterile and follow Sigel’s compression profile, delivering the highest pressure at the ankle with a controlled decrease up the leg.
Design and features
- Graduated compression in accordance with Sigel’s profile for effective prophylaxis when used per protocol.
- Open inspection hole at the ball of the foot for rapid circulation and skin checks.
- Colour-coded size and width identification to aid selection on the ward.
- Measuring ruler supplied to support accurate fitting.
- Latex-free, quick-wicking fabric to help manage perspiration and comfort.
Sizing and fitting
Use the Vienna system: determine size by ankle circumference, then confirm calf circumference (and thigh circumference for thigh-high). Verify leg length range before selection. Across the range: ankle 19–40 cm; calf 25.5–66 cm; thigh 44–92 cm; heel-to-back-of-knee 35–45 cm; heel-to-top-of-thigh 62–83 cm (XS–XXXL). Select knee-high or thigh-high per clinical assessment.
Application
- Insert a hand into the heel pocket, turn the stocking inside out to the heel, then pull over the foot and heel before drawing up the leg.
- Knee-high placement: top edge sits 2.5–5 cm below the bottom of the kneecap; smooth fabric and remove creases.
- Thigh-high placement: pull to the top of the thigh; thigh band sits ~1 cm below the gluteal furrow; smooth fabric and remove creases.
Care, observation and documentation
- Check skin integrity at least every 8 hours.
- If legs are swollen or size fluctuates, remeasure with the patient lying down every 24 hours and refit if needed.
- Washable up to 10 times; follow packaging instructions.
- Record stocking size/style, date applied, and all inspections/removals in patient records.
Contraindications
Do not use if any of the following are present:
- Leg conditions where stockings would interfere (e.g., dermatitis, immediate postoperative vein ligation, gangrene, recent skin graft).
- Severe arteriosclerosis or other ischemic vascular disease.
- Massive leg oedema or pulmonary oedema due to congestive heart failure.
- Extreme leg deformity.
