They are commonly placed inside clearly labelled clinical waste containers in hospitals, clinics, aged care facilities, laboratories and other medical settings.

These bags are typically yellow for high-visibility identification and may include clinical waste or biohazard printing to support correct waste separation. They are commonly made from plastic film such as HDPE or LDPE and are designed for everyday handling demands, with features that may include tear resistance, puncture resistance and leak resistance. Secure tie-off or sealing helps support safer containment during collection and transport.

Clinical waste bags are generally intended for soft clinical or laboratory waste such as contaminated dressings, bandages, personal protective equipment, and materials soiled with blood or other body fluids. They are available in a range of sizes to suit different bin liners and facility requirements, from smaller room-use containers to larger central collection bins.

Handling Considerations

These bags are intended for soft waste only. Sharps such as needles, blades and other items capable of puncturing the liner should be placed in approved sharps containers rather than clinical waste bags. Bags should not be overfilled, as sufficient space is needed to seal them safely. Where liquids are present, absorbent material may be required, and some higher-risk applications may call for double-bagging in line with site procedures.

Disposal

Final treatment and disposal methods vary according to local regulations and waste classification, and may include incineration, autoclaving or other approved clinical waste processes.
