Description

Overview

Avanos CLOG ZAPPER is an enzyme-based, ready-to-prepare declogging system designed to restore patency in enteral feeding tubes. The pre-measured formulation is supplied pre-loaded in a syringe and is reconstituted with water immediately before use. Suitable for adults, pediatric, and neonatal patients in hospital or home-care settings when used by trained caregivers. Manufactured by Avanos Medical, Inc.; distributed in the USA by Avanos Medical Sales, LLC. CLOG ZAPPER is a trademark of Avanos Medical, Inc., or its affiliates.

Intended Use and Compatibility

  • Clears blockages primarily caused by enteral formula/residue; effectiveness may be reduced for clogs from certain medications.
  • For use with enteral feeding devices including NG, G, J, and low-profile devices; works with most tubes, including ENFit-compatible models.

How It Works

The solution acts chemically/enzymatically to loosen and break down clogs without applying mechanical force. A combination of enzymes, acids, buffers, antimicrobial agents, a surfactant, and a metal chelator helps solubilize and dislodge accumulated material.

Composition (Allergen Advisory)

  • Maltodextrin; papain; cellulase; alpha-amylase; citric acid; ascorbic acid; disodium EDTA; disodium phosphate dihydrate; potassium sorbate; sodium lauryl sulfate.
  • Contains papaya (papain) and coconut-derived ingredients; assess for related allergies.

Kit Components

  • CLOG ZAPPER syringe(s) with pre-loaded powder
  • Applicator tubing (cut-to-length per device type)
  • 4 in x 4 in gauze pads
  • Instructions for Use (IFU)

Directions for Use (summary; follow IFU)

  • Fill the CLOG ZAPPER syringe to the 10 mL mark with water. Shake vigorously 3–5 minutes until dissolved.
  • Instill approximately 2–5 mL into the feeding tube; allow to soak about 60 minutes (minimum 30 minutes).
  • Attempt to flush with water. If unable, repeat per clinician direction. Ensure tubing is not kinked.
  • Do not attempt to mechanically break the clog with the applicator tip.
  • G-tubes: cut the applicator at the marked dot and insert into the administration port. Low-profile devices: place the feeding set per its instructions, then insert the applicator into the set.
  • Record instilled and flush volumes in intake/output.

Storage and Handling

After mixing, refrigerate when not in use and use within 24 hours.

Classification and Materials

Rx only (USA). For enteral use only; not for IV use. Single-patient use. Nonsterile. Not made with natural rubber latex.

Precautions

  • Use protective eyewear; solution can cause eye irritation.
  • Check for food-based allergies (papaya, coconut); consider patient fluid restrictions.
  • May be less effective on clogs from certain medications; use liquid formulations when possible and avoid enteric-coated tablets in feeding tubes.
  • Follow the IFU for complete preparation, administration, and safety information.
