Description
A wax curette (cerumen curette) is a handheld instrument used for the manual removal of earwax and small debris from the external auditory canal under direct visualization. It features a pen-like handle with a slender shaft and a blunt tip designed to minimize trauma. Shafts may be straight, angled, or malleable, and many handles include textured, non-slip grips for precise control. Tip options include loop/ring, scoop/spoon, and hook/pick styles, with flexibility and rigidity varying by design. Models are available in non-lighted or integrated LED versions, and sizing/shape options differ by manufacturer without a universal tip-size standard. Materials include reusable stainless steel and single-patient-use plastic or fiber-reinforced nylon.
Key features
- Blunt loop, scoop, or hook tips; some with mild serrations for traction.
- Straight, angled, or malleable shafts support different canal anatomies.
- Textured, non-slip handles enhance grip and fine control.
- Reusable stainless steel or disposable plastic/nylon options to match workflow.
- Non-lighted and lighted variants; designed for use under continuous visualization.
Typical use
Employed with a procedural otoscope/speculum or an operating microscope. Position the tip behind or alongside the cerumen and gently mobilize it without levering against canal walls. Cerumenolytic agents may be used beforehand for hardened occlusions.
Advantages and considerations
- Effective, quick, and portable; avoids moisture introduced by irrigation.
- Choice of tip shape and rigidity supports clinician preference.
- Risks include canal trauma or tympanic membrane injury if used improperly; discontinue if pain or injury is suspected.
- Reusable curettes require thorough cleaning and sterilization between patients per manufacturer instructions; disposable curettes are single-use and should not be reprocessed.
