Flaminal Enzyme Alginogel Wound Dressing

Description

Flaminal is a branded wound-dressing range of enzyme alginogel designed for moist wound healing in wounds that breach the dermis. It is used as a primary dressing for both acute and chronic wounds, including wounds with necrotic tissue or slough and wounds at risk of infection. Where infection is present, treatment should be managed under appropriate medical supervision.

Formulations

Flaminal is available in two formulations to match wound exudate levels:

Flaminal Hydro

Contains a lower alginate content and is intended for slightly or low to moderately exuding wounds.

Flaminal Forte

Contains a higher alginate content and offers greater absorbency for moderately to highly exuding wounds.

How it works

The alginate gel helps absorb excess exudate, debris, and bacteria while maintaining a moist wound environment. This supports healing and helps protect the wound edges from maceration. Flaminal also contains an antimicrobial enzyme system, commonly described as glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase, which provides antimicrobial activity within the gel matrix and helps reduce bacteria released from biofilms.

A further key function is support for continuous autolytic debridement. The gel helps loosen or dissolve necrotic tissue, fibrin, and slough, assisting wound cleansing without disrupting the natural healing process. Flaminal is consistently described as non-cytotoxic and as supporting fibroblast and keratinocyte growth.

Common applications

Flaminal may be used for pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers, superficial and deep partial-thickness burns, post-surgical wounds, traumatic wounds, oncologic or radiotherapy wounds, skin tears, and neonatal or pediatric wounds.

Application and storage

After cleansing the wound, apply a 4-5 mm layer to the wound bed and cover with a suitable secondary dressing. Dressing changes are typically required every 1-4 days, or when the gel structure is no longer intact, depending on exudate level and wound assessment.

Choose Hydro or Forte according to exudate level. If Hydro breaks down too quickly, Forte may be more appropriate. If Forte leaves excess alginate residue or fibres, Hydro may be preferable. Store below 25 C in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration is acceptable if needed to remain below 25 C, but do not freeze. After opening, tubes may be kept for up to 12 months if carefully recapped, while 500 g jars should be used within 1 week. Avoid contact with the eyes or eyelids.

Packaging

Commonly supported pack formats include 50 g tubes and 500 g jars. Some markets may also offer 10 x 10 g, 25 g, and 40 g presentations.
