Description
The Multigate Medical Products flat, non-sterile, disposable tourniquet is designed for venepuncture and peripheral IV cannulation. Measuring 2.5 cm x 60 cm and supplied in blue, it provides controlled venous stasis to support vein identification, cannula placement, and blood collection while enabling quick one‑handed release when needed.
Features and specifications
- Brand/Manufacturer: Multigate Medical Products
- Type: Flat, single-use (disposable) tourniquet
- Sterility: Non-sterile
- Size: 2.5 cm x 60 cm
- Colour: Blue
- Intended purpose: To provide venous stasis to aid vein location, cannulation, and blood sampling
- Not intended for hemorrhage control or trauma applications
Application (Half Knot technique)
- Position the tourniquet approximately 8–10 cm above the intended puncture or cannulation site.
- Cross the strands to form an X with the right strand on top, then pull the right strand to create appropriate tension.
- Holding both strands at the X, tuck the right strand under the X to form a loop below it, leaving a small excess.
- Tighten by pulling the loop and the left strand away from each other until snug (allow space for one finger beneath the band).
Removal
- Pull the right strand attached to the loop upward to release. This can be performed one‑handed while stabilising the cannula; the tourniquet loosens immediately.
Use parameters and best practice
- Do not leave the tourniquet tightened for more than 1 minute; prepare patient and equipment before tightening.
- Release as soon as blood flow is established into the first tube and before withdrawing the needle.
- Apply snugly with space for a finger underneath; avoid excessive pressure that could impair arterial flow.
- Position approximately 8–10 cm (about 4–5 finger widths) above the puncture site.
Infection prevention
- Single-use only; do not re-use.
- Handle with clean hands; avoid manipulating the tourniquet after donning gloves where practicable. If manipulation is necessary, minimise contact and use the non-dominant hand.
- Using a clean, single-use tourniquet for each patient reduces contamination and cross-infection risk.
Cautions and risks of improper use
- Prolonged or excessive stasis may cause haemoconcentration, haemolysis, pain, numbness/tingling, and may compromise sample accuracy.
- Not intended for hemorrhage control/trauma use.
