PreOp Carbohydrate Drink

Description

Nutricia preOp (lemon) is a ready‑to‑drink, clear, non‑carbonated, iso‑osmolar carbohydrate beverage designed for the pre‑operative dietary management of patients undergoing elective surgery. It is a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP), for enteral use only and must be used under medical supervision. Suitable for use within ERAS protocols and may be taken up to 2 hours prior to anaesthesia.

Intended use

• Pre‑operative carbohydrate loading for elective surgical patients to support ERAS pathways.
• Not intended as a sole source of nutrition.

Key features and composition (per 200 mL)

• Energy density: 0.5 kcal/mL (100 kcal; 430 kJ); per 100 mL: 50 kcal.
• Carbohydrate: 25.2 g (100% of energy); sugars 4.2 g; protein 0 g; fat 0 g; fibre 0 g.
• Carbohydrate source primarily maltodextrin polymer to achieve lower osmolality than pure glucose solutions and support faster gastric emptying characteristics.
• Water: 184 g.
• Osmolality: 260 mOsmol/kg H2O; osmolarity: 240 mOsmol/L; pH 4.9; potential renal solute load: 55 mOsmol/L.
• Minerals per 200 mL: sodium 100 mg (4.4 mmol), potassium 244 mg (6.2 mmol), chloride 12 mg, calcium 12 mg, phosphorus 2 mg, magnesium 2 mg.

Ingredients

Water, maltodextrin, fructose, potassium citrate, sodium citrate, citric acid (acidity regulator), lemon flavour, sweeteners (acesulfame K, sodium saccharin).

Directions for use

• Use as advised by a healthcare professional. Shake well; best served chilled.
• Typical regimens include: 4 × 200 mL the evening before surgery and 2 × 200 mL up to 2 hours prior to anaesthesia. For afternoon surgical lists, some protocols use 4 × 200 mL the morning of surgery and 2 × 200 mL up to 2 hours before anaesthesia.

• Not suitable for infants under 1 year; use with caution in young children and in patients with diabetes mellitus.

• No gluten‑containing ingredients; tested <5 ppm detectable gluten.
• Low lactose (approximately <0.006 g/100 mL; <0.012 g per 200 mL).
• Halal certified; Kosher approval available in certain markets.

Storage and shelf life

• Store in a cool, dry place (5–25°C). Once opened, reseal, refrigerate, and use within 24 hours.
• Shelf life up to 15 months; refer to best‑before date.
