Description
Multigate Medical Products’ Fluro-Tec XRD abdominal composite sponges are single-use, 6‑ply sponges designed to enhance intra-operative visibility and support protocols that reduce retained-sponge risk. Constructed from a cotton/viscose/polyester composite with a white base, they deliver high absorbency and low linting for consistent performance in abdominal procedures. A fluorescent green‑yellow thread provides striking visual contrast in blood, while an integrated X-ray detectable (XRD) element adds an additional layer of detectability.
Materials and construction
- 6‑ply composite blend (cotton/viscose/polyester)
- White sponge with fluorescent, non‑absorbent green‑yellow thread for contrast
- Low‑linting construction suitable for OR environments
Detection and counting
- 9.5× more visible to the naked eye when blood‑soaked than a standard sponge; visibility further enhanced under UV light
- UV‑detectable thread assists in low‑light checks
- Integrated XRD thread for radiographic detection; no loose XRD threads
- Designed to support a reliable 5‑count
Absorbency and performance
- High absorbency across sizes: approximately 9× its own weight
- Small (22.5 × 22.5 cm): ~11 g average weight; absorbs ~9× its weight
- Medium (30 × 30 cm): ~19 g average weight; absorbs ~9× its weight
- Large (50 × 30 cm): ~30 g average weight; absorbs ~9× its weight
Sizes and pack formats
- Sterile packs (single-use): 5 sponges per pack in 22.5 × 22.5 cm, 30 × 30 cm, or 50 × 30 cm
- Non‑sterile packs: 1 sponge per pack in the same sizes
Environmental and design notes
- Composite construction can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to ~25% compared with equivalent cotton sponges while maintaining a similar feel and absorption
- Developed in Australia in consultation with clinicians
- Product group includes patented/patent‑pending features (as noted by the manufacturer)
