Product Details

Description

Renew Inserts are a brand-specific bowel management device designed to help reduce accidental bowel leakage (ABL), also referred to as faecal incontinence. This internal anal and rectal insert is intended for single use and is worn in the anal canal to provide a physical barrier that may help limit leakage between bowel movements.

Made from soft, supple silicone, each string-free insert is supplied with a removable fingertip applicator for placement. The insert sits with one disc just inside the rectum and one just outside the anus, a design intended to help reduce leakage while still allowing the passage of gas. Both the insert and applicator are single-use and non-sterile.

Use and fit

Renew Inserts are used one at a time. They are typically worn day and night until the next bowel movement, then removed and replaced with a new insert. The product is available in Regular and Large sizes, with 30 inserts per box. Size selection should be guided by a clinician. If a smaller size is expelled unexpectedly or leakage continues, a larger size may be more suitable.

Clinical information

Cited studies report a median 81.8% reduction in ABL episode frequency, with more than 91% of users achieving at least a 20% reduction in ABL episodes. A median 29.4% reduction in Wexner score has also been reported. One cited US study reported no severe, serious, or unanticipated adverse events.

Important precautions

Renew Inserts are not intended to replace surgical treatment for ABL or faecal incontinence. Medical advice should be sought before use. Suitability may require specific assessment in some ostomates and in people with functional or neurological bowel dysfunction.

Do not use if you are allergic to silicone, are using suppositories, or if the packaging is opened or damaged. Stop use and seek medical advice if you experience bleeding haemorrhoids, rectal bleeding or bloody stool, anal or rectal pain, irritation, spasms, fissure or tearing, have had rectal surgery within the past 4 weeks, or if the insert moves upward and is not expelled with the next bowel movement.

Possible side effects

Possible side effects include a false urge to empty the bowels and mild anal irritation. These effects may lessen with continued use.
