Description
Zinc oxide tape is a rigid strapping and fixation tape commonly used in sport, first aid, and general support applications where controlled movement is needed. It is typically made with a durable cloth backing and a zinc oxide-based pressure-sensitive adhesive that helps the tape stay in place during activity. Because it is essentially non-elastic, it is suited to situations where firm support and movement restriction are preferred over stretch.
This type of tape is often chosen for short-term stabilization of ankles, wrists, thumbs, fingers, and hands. It is also used to help secure dressings or provide fixation over intact skin or over a dressing. Common features include strong adhesion, good tensile and tear strength, breathability, and the ability to be torn by hand for quick application. Performance during sweat is generally reliable, while water resistance can vary between products.
Use and application
Apply to clean, dry skin with the joint positioned as desired, often in a neutral position. Standard taping methods may include anchors, stirrups, and figure-eight wraps. Avoid applying excessive tension, and when taping extremities, keep digits visible so circulation can be observed.
Wear and removal
Zinc oxide tape is generally intended for single use and short-term wear, often for the duration of activity. Remove it slowly in the direction of hair growth. Warm water or an adhesive remover may assist with removal.
Important considerations
Do not apply directly to broken skin. Prolonged wear or overly tight application may contribute to skin irritation, sensitivity reactions, hair pull, maceration, or circulation and nerve symptoms.
